minority rule

it looked like any other cinema complex, it was like any other cinema complex, but not like any I knew when I was young, old wooden seats, big bulky noisy curtains, stained screen, a sound system like an old AM radio, no this one was clean, modern, yet stale.

I walked in and sat down, the usual crowd of critics, nothing on the screen, everyone waiting for a victim, yes, nowadays we create our own movies, too many critics around now, and no one is willing to produce big movies anymore.

it works like this now, every seat has a player built into it, every seat has a remote controller, anyone can sit down and put in a disc, and anyone can control that disc, from any chair.

so anyway, I've come along to play a disc, unheard of, but the critics are there, what for you ask, if no one plays discs anymore, or makes movies, so why are the critics here - well for people like me.

credits role, very simple, cat meow's, critics laugh, I can feel their fingers on the eject button, opening scene starts, ah it's like a classic scene from an old movie, still playing, no one has hit the switch yet, but soon.

just before this scene closes, quick cut to something like a famous car chase scene, gasp from some of the critics, they still seem captivated, but those fingers are hovering over the switch, I can feel it...all those critics, ready to strike.

so guess what I do, I hit the switch ... yes the minority can rule!

but this complex has another purpose, it's where we go to vote, not for representatives, we come here to vote on many aspects of running the state, and we get rewarded for voting, the public servants and the government administrators make up the laws from applications, anyone can make an application, just follow the correct paperwork, yes it has to be on paper, not an easy task I must say, but anyone can propose a law or a policy.

so what do the representatives do? hell, I don't know, we don't have to vote, we can lose the right to vote, most people don't bother, but the rewards can be inviting.

yes but most times this complex is used for voting and it is only us old school types that take advantage of the complex facilities for showing movies, every now and again a "state-sponsored" movie is shown, in fact, one is scheduled tonight, hence so many critics, but the thing about the sponsored movies is that you can't control their playback they just start showing at the advertised time and play till the end.

tonight's movie will start soon, everyone is still looking at me, talking about my movie and how I stopped it before they could, but I had control, one person able to take control, what they don't realise is that I have figured out a way to hack the controller, and I can now control the "sponsored movie", the state movie that will show soon, I can stop it ... and even show my own pre-prepared movie, cut in at any point, and put my views out there and they won't be able to stop me, yes the minority can rule

They do all the work!

We don't actually work anymore, they do all the work now, the Cyborgs, why hire a human when you can get a Cyborg. Those with old money do all right now, but the rest of us "work" for the Government, the government is the biggest employer in our State, it's official we work for the Government, we are called "Consumers", we get paid by the Government to consume, not that we can afford any of the luxury items that old money can afford. Most companies are now owned by the government, and the government is the old money, we get to vote for our representatives on the government, but that does not really mean anything, we don't actually have any control over what the government does.

But back to the Cyborgs, the ultimate strike breaker, well at least you still can pick a Cyborg, the eyes, you can always tell by the eyes, well for now anyway.

Last time I worked I was still a kid, back when the new ways came in, after the Occupation that is, I worked in a factory.

I worked alongside the old welding robots and made sure they kept going, nowadays they look after themselves or the Cyborgs look after them, actually, no one knows what goes on in those factories, now only cyborgs enter them.

We don't have wars they are called incursions, the cyborgs are on the ground and the drones are in the air, the UN controls the battlefields nowadays, and small countries are desperate for resources, I think they still work in countries like that, not so much tourism these days unless you want to visit the outers, places like Mars and Venus are all the rage to visit if you have the credits or get caught up in a volunteer cycle.
